Types of Gum Disease

Fresno Dentist Serving Madera, Clovis, Visalia, Tulare & Nearby Areas in California

The two primary types of gum disease are gingivitis and periodontitis. Of the two, gingivitis is the most common. In fact, the American Dental Association estimates that nearly all adults will suffer from gingivitis to some extent during their lifetime. However, periodontists is not far behind. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention suggests that over half of Americans over the age of 30 are suffering from this more advanced form of gum disease.

Symptoms of gum disease may be similar no matter which type you are experiencing. Swollen, red gums that bleed easily are the first indication of this oral health issue, and should be brought to the attention of an experienced dentist right away.

If you are experiencing gum tenderness or bleeding, please contact Gregory G. Miyake, DDS or call 559-224-0103 to schedule an examination at our comfortable Fresno office.

Preventing Gum Disease

Maintaining peak dental hygiene is the only way to prevent gum disease. This includes brushing at least twice a day and flossing at least once. Flossing is one of the most commonly neglected parts of a good oral hygiene routine, and one of the main reasons over 60 million American adults are suffering from periodontitis. Taking time to floss at least once a day will go a long way in helping prevent all forms of gum disease.

Of course, brushing and flossing alone are not always enough to prevent gum disease. Your daily routine must be complemented by biannual visits with our Fresno dentist for cleanings and examinations. If gum disease is detected during these visits, Dr. Miyake can provide deep gum cleaning to treat the issue.

Gum disease, like all oral health conditions, is best treated early on. By maintaining regularly scheduled dental appointments you give us the ability to detect gum disease in its early stages and provide treatment before large problems occur.
