Types of Dental Crowns

Fresno Dentist Serving Madera, Clovis, Visalia, Tulare & Nearby Areas in California

There are three primary types of dental crowns:

  • Metal/gold
  • Porcelain-fused-to-metal
  • Porcelain/ceramic

The type of dental crown best suited to strengthen and perfect your smile will depend on a variety of factors including tooth location and the extent of damage. During your dental crown consultation, Fresno cosmetic dentist Dr. Gregory Miyake will carefully evaluate your needs to help you determine which dental crown option will best address them.

Metal Crowns

Metal crowns, including gold crowns, and porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns are typically stronger than all-porcelain or ceramic alternatives. Due to their strength and durability, these crowns may be better suited for teeth that perform a large amount of biting and chewing function. In addition, metal and gold dental crowns do not tend to wear down as easily and may even prove gentler to adjacent teeth.

While they are more durable and resistant to wear, gold and metal dental crowns are not as aesthetically pleasing as those made from ceramic or porcelain. To address this, porcelain-fused-to-metal offers a fantastic in between. These crowns are stronger than all-porcelain, but less obtrusive than gold or metal options, making them ideal for a number of our dental crown patients.

Ceramic and Porcelain Dental Crowns

Ceramic and porcelain crowns look and feel like natural tooth enamel, making them the most aesthetically pleasing dental crown options. These crowns may be best for teeth that do not perform a large amount of chewing function as they are more prone to wear. However, being more prone to wear does not mean white dental crowns are weak. In fact, when cared for properly, these restorations can continue producing favorable results for several years.

The type of dental crown best suited to meet your needs is something that requires an assessment from an experienced cosmetic dentist. If you are in need of a dental crown, call 559-224-0103 to schedule your initial consultation at our Fresno office and learn which option is right for you.
