Symptoms of Gum Disease

Fresno Dentist Serving Madera, Clovis, Visalia, Tulare & Nearby Areas in California

The two types of gum disease are gingivitis and periodontitis. Gingivitis is the most common type of gum disease and, when addressed early on, is fairly easy to treat. Symptoms of gingivitis may include gums that are swollen, tender, and red in appearance. Gingivitis may also result in gum bleeding, particularly when brushing your teeth or eating crunchy foods.

Symptoms of gingivitis should be brought to the attention of Fresno dentist Dr. Gregory Miyake as soon as they appear. In most cases a simple general dentistry visit will be sufficient to treat this type of gum disease.

If you are experiencing any of the symptoms of gingivitis, please contact Gregory G. Miyake, DDS or call (559) 478-2235 today to schedule an appointment with our Fresno dentist.

Symptoms of Periodontitis

Periodontitis can occur when gingivitis is not treated right away. Initially, the symptoms of periodontitis are similar to gingivitis and include red, swollen, tender gums that bleed easily. As this form of gum disease progresses, symptoms may include:

  • Persistent bad breath
  • Chronic bad taste in the mouth
  • Loose or shifting teeth
  • New gaps or spaces in between teeth
  • Changes in bite tension
  • Pus in between teeth
  • Gums pulling away from tooth roots

These issues must be brought to the attention of our Fresno dentist immediately to prevent serious oral and systemic health issues. Periodontitis can result in bone necrosis and systemic infections which may increase your risk for heart disease and a number of other problems.

Treating Periodontitis

Treating periodontitis requires deep gum cleaning, also known as scaling at root planing. In cases where periodontitis has done irreversible damage, surgical intervention and dental restorations may also be necessary. What treatment can best eliminate periodontitis will be determined by Dr. Miyake during your periodontal examination.
