Sleep Apnea & Snoring Treatments

Fresno Dentist Serving Madera, Clovis, Visalia, Tulare & Nearby Areas in California

Sleep apnea is a serious condition that affects millions of people nationwide, many of whom don’t realize they are afflicted with this disorder. A person who suffers from sleep apnea will stop breathing several times while they are asleep. These periods of non-breathing can last anywhere from ten seconds to a full minute at a time.

Because it constantly interrupts your sleep and compromises your breathing, sleep apnea can cause a host of health problems, including fatigue, heart problems, insomnia, and even depression. Loud snoring is one of the most common symptoms of this disorder, although not everyone who snores has sleep apnea.

Dr. Greg Miyake can help educate you on the causes and effects of sleep apnea. If necessary, he will refer you to a sleep apnea specialist for further treatment. If your problem is simply loud, chronic snoring and it is determined you do not have sleep apnea, we offer special snoring appliances and treatments that can help.

What Happens When Your Breathing Stops?

Episodes of stopped breathing can occur hundreds of time per night, preventing you from getting continuous, restorative sleep. As airflow is interrupted, your blood oxygen levels immediately drop, and your brain will alert you to wake up. You will likely not remember waking up, since your brain will not fully pull you into a conscious state, but your bed partner may notice you subconsciously clearing your throat, gasping, or choking as you attempt to restore the flow of air.

Sleep Apnea Symptoms

The following day you may experience several symptoms, such as:

  • Snoring
  • Drowsiness
  • Dry mouth
  • Sore throat
  • Poor concentration
  • Irritability
  • Headaches
  • Slowed reflexes

Over time, sleep apnea may contribute to diseases like diabetes, high blood pressure, stroke, and obesity.

Alternatives for Current Apnea Sufferers

If you’ve been previously diagnosed with sleep apnea and have not had much luck with the treatment known as the CPAP (Continuous Positive Airflow Pressure) device, the team at our Fresno area dental practice can help you find an alternative that can help. We will work with the doctor that diagnosed your condition to design a solution or combination of solutions that will offer you relief.
