Sedation Dentistry

Fresno Dentist Serving Madera, Clovis, Visalia, Tulare & Nearby Areas in California

There are good kinds of fear that warn us when we’re in danger, and then there are negative types of fear that keep us from taking action when we should. Fear of the dentist prevents countless people from getting the professional dental care they need to maintain healthy teeth and gums.

If you have been avoiding important check-ups because of your anxiety about the dentist, Dr. Greg Miyake offers two sedation dentistry options to ease your mind during your time in the dental chair. During your initial consultation, he can discuss your level of anxiety with you, present the facts on both methods of sedation, and help you choose the option that is right for you.

Nitrous Oxide (Laughing Gas)

The nitrous oxide method of sedation is usually best for patients with mild to medium levels of dental anxiety. Before treatment, Dr. Miyake will administer the nitrous oxide through an inhalation mask. Immediately, patients will experience a euphoric wave of relaxation. You will still be conscious during your procedure, but you will likely not remember any details about it.

After the dental procedure is performed, the effects of nitrous oxide tend to wear off quickly. Nitrous oxide patients are usually able to drive themselves and return to work if necessary.

Oral Sedation

More powerful than nitrous oxide, oral sedation is recommended for patients who experience medium to high levels of anxiety during dental sessions. Oral sedation is also the method of choice for patients who want to combine more than one cosmetic dentistry treatment into a longer appointment.

You will be given a safe sedative to take 1–2 hours before your appointment time. A friend or family member will need to drive you to our office. After the medication kicks in, you will feel very relaxed and sleepy, but you will still be conscious and responsive. Dr. Miyake will check to make sure that you are at a comfortable sedation level and then proceed with your treatment. When your appointment is complete, you will need a ride home, since the medication takes a few hours to wear off. After an oral sedation session, you can expect to have little or no memory of treatment.

Overcoming Your Anxiety

The goal of sedation dentistry is to help you get the dental care you need and want despite your fears and anxieties about the dentist’s chair. We also hope that your positive experiences at our office will help you start looking forward to your dental appointments, so at some point in the future, you will no longer need sedation.
