Gum Disease

Fresno Dentist Serving Madera, Clovis, Visalia, Tulare & Nearby Areas in California

Gum disease is a common oral health issue that can be easy or difficult to treat depending on when it is first detected. Due to this, knowing the symptoms of gum disease is essential for preventing advanced oral health concerns including tooth loss and jawbone necrosis.

If you are experiencing initial symptoms such as red or tender gum tissue, gums that bleed easily, or a persistent bad taste in the mouth, Fresno dentist Dr. Gregory Miyake can help. Coming in for an examination will allow Dr. Miyake to determine if a routine cleaning or more advanced treatment option will be needed to protect your teeth – and your body – from the dangers of this disease.

To schedule an examination at our Fresno office, please contact Gregory G. Miyake online or by calling 559-224-0103 today. Dr. Miyake serves the communities of Clovis, Tulare, Visalia, and Madera as well as all surrounding California communities.

Types of Gum Disease

There are two types of gum disease:

  • Gingivitis – the earliest stage of gum disease is gingivitis. At this stage, gum bleeding and tenderness accompanied by a bad taste in the mouth or chronic bad breath are common. Treatment for gingivitis may range from enhanced at-home routines, the addition of an antibacterial mouthwash to your daily oral care, and a thorough professional cleaning. Gingivitis tends to respond very well to treatment when caught early on
  • Periodontitis – progressive gum disease is known as periodontitis and this type of gum disease can range from mild to chronic. Periodontitis may show symptoms including loose or shifting teeth, the presence of puss in between teeth, and gum recession. Left untreated and this type of gum disease may result in tooth loss, jawbone necrosis, and a host of systemic health problems

Periodontitis will require deep gum cleaning or another advanced treatment option. During your examination Dr. Miyake will discuss all of your treatment options to ensure you are receiving the services you need to protect your teeth and gums. It should be noted however that periodontitis can be chronic and require both enhanced daily care and repeated deep cleanings for optimal results.

Preventing Gum Disease

The best way to prevent gum disease is by brushing your teeth after every meal and flossing both morning and night. Adding an antibacterial mouthwash can also be useful, but you need to be careful if you have restorations as alcohol can loosen the bonding used to hold these in place. Adding biannual visits to your daily care is also essential for the prevention of gum disease and equally important for prompt detection and swift treatment should the disease begin to develop.
