Dental Crowns and Bridges

Fresno Dentist Serving Madera, Clovis, Visalia, Tulare & Nearby Areas in California

Dental crowns and dental bridges are two methods of improving your smile that enhance both the look and function of your teeth. A crown is a dental restoration – a “cap” designed to be placed over the surface of the weakened teeth to protect and reinforce it. Meanwhile, a dental bridge is a fixture that uses a series of dental crowns to replace missing teeth.

Dental Crowns to Protect Teeth

Crowns are excellent cosmetic dentistry treatments for protecting teeth that have been weakened by decay, or cracked due to physical injury. Crowns are made from state-of-the-art materials to restore the size and shape of a compromised tooth so it can function normally again. Dental crowns are usually the preferred cosmetic dentistry options when regular fillings can’t sufficiently cover the damaged areas of a tooth. When placed correctly, a crown should look and feel no different than a natural tooth, maintaining and improving your natural bite.

For most patients, porcelain crowns are the ideal solution, as they provide a very strong restoration that is resistant to cracking and chipping. Also, porcelain mimics many of the qualities of natural enamel, providing beautiful aesthetic results. Depending on your needs, other types of dental crowns may be needed. This can be determined during your initial consultation with our Fresno cosmetic dentist.

Dental crowns are typically placed in two visits. During your first appointment, Dr. Miyake will remove the decay and take an impression of the tooth. After the impression is sent to the lab and your new crown is created, you will return to be fitted with the crown, and any adjustments will be made to ensure a comfortable bite.

Dental Bridges to Replace Missing Teeth

If you have one or more missing teeth, a dental bridge is a popular solution that is less invasive and less expensive than a dental implant. A bridge is a fixture with three elements – a false tooth that is anchored in place by two dental crowns attached to your surrounding teeth. Unlike removable dentures, a dental bridge is permanent.

During the bridge process, Dr. Miyake prepares the neighboring teeth and then takes an impression of the entire treatment area. While the lab is creating your new dental bridge from the impression, you will wear a temporary bridge. During your next visit, your new bridge will be bonded into place, and any adjustments will be made for a perfect fit.

If you’ve been on the fence about whether or not to replace your missing tooth (or teeth), remember that dental bridges can help keep teeth from shifting out of place, correct gap-related bite issues, reduce your risk of periodontal disease, and even improve your speech.
