Food and Drinks

One of the most frequent questions about tooth whitening we get regards the effect of what we eat and drink on our teeth.

Most people understand that what we consume can have a dramatic effect on the health of our teeth. We all remember our childhood dentist warning us about sugary foods and tooth decay.

Similarly, certain foods and drinks work to stain your teeth and rob you of your bright smile. These include:

  • Red wine
  • Coffee
  • Tea
  • Sodas
  • Acidic fruits and vegetables (apples and potatoes, for example)

Dr. Miyake can give you a more complete list of foods and drinks that can stain your teeth. You don’t have to completely cut these foods from your diet, but consuming them in moderation will go a long way toward ensuring you won’t need professional teeth whitening.

Other Causes

There are factors besides what you eat that affect your teeth coloring. Those variables include:

  • Smoking
  • Poor dental hygiene; you should always brush twice a day, floss regularly and see Dr. Miyake at least once every six months
  • Age; your enamel naturally thins as you get older, exposing the yellow-ish dentin underneath
  • Genetics
  • Early, frequent childhood exposure to fluoride

Some of these problems are easy enough for our Tulare patients to address. By quitting smoking and maintaining basic dental hygiene you can protect your teeth.

On the other hand, there’s not much you can do about age, genetics or your past fluoride usage. In these situations professional teeth whitening options might be right for you.

Dr. Miyake has over 30 years of experience helping the people of the Tulare, California area with teeth whitening services. Please contact Dr. Gregory G. Miyake today for more information.
