The American Dental Association has recently released a list of some common myths about gum disease. Debunking common misconceptions becomes increasingly important this time of year, when the extra intake of sugary and starchy foods can increase risks of oral health concerns. Fresno dentist Dr. Gregory Miyake would like to remind our patients to take time to care for teeth and gums this Holiday Season for optimal oral health throughout the year.

Myths about gum disease covered by the ADA include:

  • Gum disease is not that common – to the contrary, the CDC reports that half of all American adults have some form of gum disease
  • If I don’t have cavities, I can’t get gum disease – wrong again, cavities are caused by acids and bacteria on the surface of the tooth, gum disease is caused by bacteria below the gum line
  • Bleeding gums during pregnancy are normal – bleeding gums are a clear sign of gum disease. Gum disease is linked to complications with pregnancy. If you are pregnant and your gums are bleeding you need to contact Dr. Miyake right away

There are of course, several myths surrounding oral health and significant misinformation about how to avoid common dental problems. During your routine visits with Dr. Miyake we can answer any questions you have about oral health and help ensure your teeth stay strong and beautiful for years to come.
