Vacations, particularly those that may not involve running water, may seem like an okay time to loosen up on your oral hygiene routine. However, neglecting to care for your teeth – even for just a few days – can have far-reaching consequences. No matter what you have planned for this upcoming Labor Day Weekend, Fresno dentist Dr. Gregory Miyake strongly encourages you take a few minutes each day to care for the health and beauty of your smile.

Why Brushing Matters

Plaque forms on your teeth after every meal and snack. Plaque is sticky, but can be removed from teeth through brushing and flossing. Tartar, on the other hand, is much more difficult to address.

It only takes about 24 hours for plaque to harden into tartar. Once this happens, risks for tooth decay and infection, gum disease, and other oral health issues increase. Brushing morning and night and flossing at least once during the day – in a hotel room, outside of your tent, or at home –  significantly reduces your risks for these issues and can help keep your smile bright, white, and healthy for years to come.

If you are looking for a dentist in the Fresno area, please contact Gregory G. Miyake, DDS today. Dr. Miyake provides general, restorative, and cosmetic dentistry services for people living in the Fresno, Clovis, Tulare, and Madera areas of California.

A new analysis of remains in a pre-Mesolithic burial site in Central Sudan has uncovered something remarkable: only one percent of the skeletons studied show signs of tooth decay. Researchers believe this is due to the bacteria inhibiting properties found in the purple nutsedge – a plant native to the region that may have been used as both food and medicine.

Whether or not this ancient people used purple nutsedge to intentionally prevent cavities is unknown. However, nutsedge has been used throughout Africa, India, and China as a form of medicine for millennia and it is possible that ancient Sudanese cultures were aware of its benefits.

Modern Options

You may know purple nutsedge as a noxious weed and most likely don’t want to start eating its tubers to fight cavities. Fortunately, modern dentistry practices allow for cavity prevention without restoring to weed eating, offering methods that are more pleasant and effective. Tulare dentist Dr. Gregory Miyake is pleased to offer state-of-the art treatments that can not only help prevent cavities from forming, but also keep your teeth bright and beautiful for a lifetime. He would be happy to discuss ways you can keep teeth healthy, strong, and brilliant during your next regularly scheduled cleaning and examination.

The most common type of dental implant is the root form. Root form implants are inserted directly into jawbone where they serve as a solid foundation for restorations such as dental crowns, bridges, or dentures. With this type of dental implant, Fresno dentist Dr. Gregory Miyake can restore the greatest amount of strength and beauty.

If you do not have sufficient bone density to support a root form implant, Dr. Miyake may recommend one of two options: bone grafting or plate form implants. Bone grafting will allow for root form dental implants to be placed, but may be unnecessary for some patients. The alternative – plate form implants – are thin enough to fit into narrow jaws and are capable of restoring significant function and optimal aesthetics.

When the jaw is neither wide nor deep enough to support plate of root form restorations, subperiosteal implants may be the best option. These dental implants are inserted below the gum line but above the jaw, allowing for a stronger restoration than dentures or a bridge, though not as strong as other implant types.

What is best for your smile will be determined during your dental implants consultation at our comfortable Fresno office.

In its earliest stages, gum disease may be all but unnoticeable. A slight reddening or swelling of gum tissue may be present, but this often remains undetected until more significant problems occur. While this stage may remain undetected at home, Clovis dentist Dr. Gregory Miyake can easily spot these symptoms during your routine checkups. When caught this early on, treatment may require little more than improving the consistency of your daily brushing and flossing routine.

As gum disease progresses, gums may begin to bleed easily when brushing or eating crunchy foods. At this stage, prescription mouthwash may become necessary to reduce infection. Left untreated, gum disease may result in chronic bad breath, a bad taste in the mouth that will not go away, and the appearance of pus between teeth. This indicates more advanced stages of gum disease and may require scaling and root planing to treat.

Advanced gum disease will result in gums pulling away from teeth, teeth becoming loose and shifting out of place, and eventual tooth loss. These things can progress to other serious issues including bone necrosis and increased risks for systemic illness and disease. Gum disease that has progressed to this stage may require surgical intervention to treat.

The best way to avoid serious problems from gum disease is to catch and treat it early on. If you live in or around Clovis and are overdue for a dental exam, please contact Gregory G. Miyake, DDS to schedule an appointment today. Dr. Miyake serves Clovis and surrounding areas from our comfortable Fresno office.

Metal fillings can make teeth look dingy and unbecoming, and may even interfere with your willingness to show your smile. If you are embarrassed by the appearance of metal restorations, replacing them with tooth colored fillings can help restore confidence. However, aesthetics are far from the most pressing reason to consider replacing metal fillings.

Tooth Damage

Metal fillings are packed into teeth – a process that requires the removal of a large amount of enamel. This means that the simple act of placing metal fillings further compromised the structure of a tooth.

Metal fillings are not heat stable. As temperatures fluctuate in the mouth, metal fillings expand and contract – a process that can crack or break teeth compromised by the initial placing of fillings. Metal fillings can also come loose or fall out, potentially damaging additional teeth.

By contrast, tooth colored fillings are bonded to the surface of the tooth, preventing their coming loose or falling out. They do not change sizes with temperature fluctuations, and they are better able to provide long-term protection to teeth impacted by decay. Tooth colored fillings are also shaded to match teeth in color, allowing them to fit seamlessly into your smile and restore both strength and beauty.

If you would like to discuss replacing metal fillings with our experienced Clovis dentist, please contact Gregory G. Miyake, DDS today. Dr. Miyake serves patients living in Clovis and surrounding areas from our conveniently located Fresno office.

State-by-state numbers released by Gallup show that 64.6 percent of adults in California report seeing a dentist for routine dental care at least once last year. This number is higher than many states, but slightly below the national average – although California still ranks among the top ten states with the healthiest teeth.

Regular visits to the dentist are important for both the health and beauty of your smile. These visits give us an opportunity to professionally clean and polish your teeth, and allow Clovis dentist Dr. Gregory Miyake to detect minor oral health concerns before they become serious oral health problems.

Biannual Visits

While even one visit every year is good, two is ideal for optimal oral health. Tooth decay and gum disease can both occur quickly and, when not detected early on, may produce significant oral and systemic health problems. The best way to avoid unnecessary complications is through frequent cleanings and examinations with our experienced Clovis dentist.

If you are overdue for a dental cleaning and examination, please contact Gregory G. Miyake, DDS today to schedule an appointment. A 2013 survey by the American Association of Orthodontists found a 14 percent increase in the number of adults seeking orthodontic care between 2010 and 2012, and the reason why is clear. Options such as Invisalign® now make correcting malocclusion more accessible to adults by offering an aesthetically pleasing and incredibly effective alternative to braces. Fresno dentist Dr. Gregory Miyake would be happy to meet with you to assess your smile and help you determine if Invisalign can help you reach your goals.

About Invisalign

Invisalign corrects malocclusion with aligner trays as opposed to wires and brackets. Made of soft, clear plastic, Invisalign aligner trays progressively push teeth into their correct position over a six to 18 month treatment period.

While undergoing Invisalign treatment, you will return to our Fresno office every few weeks for an assessment of progress. As you are ready, these visits will also allow us to provide you with your next set of aligners.

Because they can be removed, Invisalign aligners do not require dietary restrictions, nor do they interfere with oral hygiene. The soft plastic aligners do not cut or irritate soft oral tissue, and the clear appearance allows aligners to remain virtually undetectable. For these reasons and more, Invisalign offers an ideal orthodontic solution for adults.

If you live in or around Fresno, California and would like to learn if Invisalign is right for you, please contact Gregory G. Miyake, DDS today to schedule your initial consultation.

One of the largest advantages of dental implants is their ability to integrate into the jawbone and become a permanent part of your smile. Dental implants are the only tooth replacement option that can replace a tooth’s missing root, and the only option that can boast providing a lifetime of support. Fresno implant dentist Dr. Gregory Miyake would be happy to discuss this with you in greater detail during your dental implant consultation.

Caring for Dental Implants

Dental implants are capable of offering a permanent solution for tooth replacement, but cannot provide this benefit on their own. To ensure long-lasting results, you will need to properly care for your implant.

Caring for a dental implant is just as simple as caring for your natural teeth. Brushing after every meal and snack, flossing once to twice a day, and visiting Dr. Miyake twice a year for cleanings and examinations is often all it takes to keep your implant and all surrounding bone and tissue strong. If potential issues are detected during your regularly scheduled visits, Dr. Miyake will discuss ways you can strengthen your at-home routine and help ensure your dental implants last for a lifetime.

If you live in or around Fresno, California and are missing one or more teeth, please contact Gregory G. Miyake, DDS to schedule a dental implant consultation and learn more about these long-lasting dental restorations.

There are a number of products whose advertisements boast their ability to clean in between teeth. Many toothbrushes, mouthwashes, and other dental hygiene products suggest they can free you from the burden of flossing by being just as effective at preventing plaque buildup and gum disease.

Sadly, those products, no matter what they claim, will never be capable of replacing floss. The bottom line is this: there is no good alternative to flossing. Not one.

Why Flossing Matters

New products come and go, but floss remains the most effective way to remove food particles, plaque, and bacteria from in between teeth. Specially designed toothbrushes may knock some plaque away. Antiseptic mouthwashes may kill some bacteria. Even toothpicks might be useful for removing visible food particles. But none of these options is anywhere near as useful as good old fashioned floss at preventing issues as diverse as bad breath and gum disease.

Clovis dentist Dr. Gregory Miyake understands that flossing may take some getting used to. During your regularly scheduled cleanings and examinations he would be happy to discuss proper technique, helping eventually make the process second nature.

Sleep apnea can interfere with a good night’s sleep. This, in turn, can result in issues such as excessive daytime fatigue, inability to concentrate, memory problems, and even emotional difficulties. People who have not gotten enough sleep are at an increased risk for accidents, are less productive at work, and may be incapable of doing the things they enjoy. These are often reason enough to seek treatment. However, if you need more convincing, consider this: Left untreated, sleep apnea can be fatal.

Risks of Untreated Sleep Apnea

Sleep apnea increases the risk of obesity, type-2 diabetes, and similar health conditions. It has also been identified as a risk factor for:

  • Arterial fibrillation
  • Hypertension

Sleep apnea can have a profound impact on the health of your heart and significantly increase your risk for fatal diseases. Fortunately, Fresno sleep apnea dentist Dr. Gregory Miyake may be able to reduce your risks for these issues with a simple sleep apnea treatment.

Treating sleep apnea may require a combination of customized oral devices and lifestyle adjustments. Which steps are necessary for your case will be based on your individual needs and are best determined by an experienced sleep apnea dentist like Dr. Miyake.
