Treating temporomandibular joint disorder (TMD) is the primary focus of neuromuscular dentistry. Fresno neuromuscular dentist Dr. Greg Miyake utilizes the latest in dental technology to detect this common disorder, and applies his extensive training and years of experience to find the most effective treatment for each individual patient.

If you are suffering from TMD, please contact Gregory G. Miyake, DDS or call 559-224-0103 today to schedule an evaluation with our Fresno, California neuromuscular dentist.

Treating TMD

In many instances, TMD is initially treated with a TENS unit. Dr. Miyake can use a TENS unit to relax jaw muscles and increase blood flow, immediately relieving pain and other symptoms of TMD.

The most effective long-term treatment of TMD is dependent on factors unique to each case. Our Fresno neuromuscular dentist may choose to treat your condition through methods including:

  • Oral splints and mouthguards to prevent nocturnal bruxism, hold the jaw in proper alignment, and retrain jaw muscles
  • Invisalign® to correct malocclusion, a common cause of TMD
  • Dental restorations or a smile makeover to restore alignment to the bite

In many cases, these treatments will be combined with jaw massage and relaxation techniques, stress reduction, and other lifestyle modifications to help enhance their effectiveness and prevent TMD from reoccurring.

To learn more about your TMD treatment options, please contact our experienced Fresno neuromuscular dentist today.

If you are missing one or more teeth, a dental bridge can restore function and beauty to your smile. As the name implies, a dental bridge is used to bridge the gap between missing teeth, providing a strong foundation for restorations such as dental crowns and preventing issues such as adjacent tooth slippage.

To learn more about dental bridges and other tooth replacement options, please call Tulare dentist Dr. Gregory Miyake at 559-224-0103 today to schedule an initial consultation.

Types of Dental Bridges

There are three primary types of dental bridges:

  • Traditional – Affixed to crowns placed over adjacent teeth on both sides of a gap
  • Cantilever – Used when only one tooth is adjacent to a gap
  • Maryland bonded – Plastic teeth and gums used for front teeth

Of these, Maryland bonded bridges offer the least reliable hold as they often require adhesives to stay in place. During your initial consultation with Dr. Miyake, your options will be discussed and the type of bridge best suited to meet your unique needs determined.

If you live in or around the Tulare area of California and would like to learn more about dental bridges and other tooth replacement options, please contact Gregory D. Miyake today to schedule an initial consultation.

A newly discovered link between gum disease and Alzheimer’s has been reported by the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease (JHD). It has long been known that gum disease is linked to heart problems, respiratory illness, and complications with both diabetes and pregnancy, but this new link serves to reinforce the importance of a consistent general dentistry routine.

To schedule a general dentistry appointment at our comfortable Fresno, California office, please contact Gregory G. Miyake, D.D.S. or call 559-224-0103 today.

Bacteria in the Gums

In the JHD article, researchers noted that byproducts of bacterium Prophyromonas gingivalis (P. gingivalis), which is found in the mouth, respiratory tract, as well as intestines, were found in the brain samples of four out of ten Alzheimer’s patients. P. gingivalis was not, however, found in any of the brain samples of people at similar ages who did not suffer from dementia. This helps to illustrate the importance of maintaining clean teeth and gums at all stages of life.

Fresno dentist Dr. Gregory Miyake is pleased to offer advanced dental services to help prevent gum disease and targeted treatments should it occur. During your regularly scheduled appointments Dr. Miyake will check your teeth for signs of gum disease, provide a thorough cleaning, and discuss how you can further reduce your risks at home.

In some instances, sleep apnea is linked to genetics or family traits such as a larger neck circumference and a narrow airway. Sleep apnea is also more common in males who are over the age of 60, though race may also play a role as those of African descent tend to develop the condition with greater frequency.

In addition to these factors, some lifestyle choices increase your risk for sleep apnea. These include:

  • Excessive weight
  • Smoking
  • Alcohol or sedative use
  • Inactivity

If you have been diagnosed with sleep apnea, Tulare dentist Gregory Miyake can work with your doctor to find the least invasive and most effective way to restore a good night’s sleep.

Treating Sleep Apnea

Dr. Miyake has found that snoring treatments such as mouthguards and oral splints are incredibly effective at treating some forms of sleep apnea. These devices can help oral tissue relax while also holding your tongue in place, better enabling proper airflow. Dental appliances will not work for every type of sleep apnea, but Dr. Miyake will be happy to work with you on an individual basis to see if this noninvasive treatment is right for you.

To learn more about sleep apnea treatment in the Tulare, California area, please contact Gregory D. Miyake today to schedule an initial consultation.

The process for dental implants can take anywhere from three to six months. After your implants have been placed by Madera dentist Gregory D. Miyake, they will undergo a process known as osseointegration in which they are permanently accepted as a new tooth root by your jaw. Though this process may take more time than tooth replacement options such as dental bridges or dentures, the advantages of dental implants make this wait well worth it.

During your initial Madera dental implants consultation, we will be happy to discuss this with you in more detail.

The Dental Implant Process

The dental implant process requires three visits to our office. These will be for the placement of your:

  • Implant
  • Abutment
  • Dental restoration

Each part of the dental implant process is equally important to ensure natural-looking and fully functional restoration of your smile. During your initial consultation, Dr. Miyake will discuss the dental implant process with you and help you determine if implants are the best choice for you.

If you live in or around Madera, California and have questions about dental implants, please contact Gregory D. Miyake today to schedule your initial consultation.

Many people think dentistry is a fairly new science – certainly no more than one or two hundred years old – but the truth is dentistry has been around for millennia. The Egyptians recorded dental practices as early as 3700 BCE, though by today’s standards their techniques were barbarous at best.

While general dentistry enjoyed advancements throughout the ages, it wasn’t until 1723 when Pierre Fauchard, the Father of Modern Dentistry, penned his work Le Chirurgiendentiste (The Surgeon Dentist) that more sophisticated practices started to be utilized. Fauchard provided detailed information on both technique and patient comfort, paving the way for gentler and more effective oral care.

Dentistry in America

The Baltimore College of Dental Surgery, known as the first dental college in the world, was founded in 1840. Here the Doctorate of Dental Surgery (DDS) was birthed as dental students learned the art and science of oral care. There are now hundreds of dental colleges in the United States, but all of them owe a debt of gratitude to those who came before them and worked to standardize dental medicine.

Madera general dentist Dr. Gregory Miyake received his DDS from Fresno State University before seeking postgraduate education at the Las Vegas Institute of Advanced Dental Studies. He would be honored to meet with you for a one-on-one consultation to discuss our modern dentistry practice and help you reach all of your oral health goals.

If you are looking for a general dentist in the Madera, California area, please contact Gregory D. Miyake today to schedule an informative consultation.

Unlike braces that pull teeth into alignment through painful manual adjustments, Invisalign® utilizes a series of soft plastic aligner trays that gently push your teeth into their optimal position. Your Invisalign trays will be customized by Madera dentist Dr. Gregory Miyake to address your specific malocclusion. Every few weeks, you will simply return to our office for the next set of aligner trays until your treatment is completed. This generally takes 12 to 18 months, but will be different for every patient.

To learn more about the Invisalign process, please call Madera dentist Gregory Miyake at 559-224-0103 to schedule an initial consultation.

Benefits of Invisalign

Invisalign offers a number of benefits such as:

·         Soft plastic trays will not damage gums or sensitive oral tissue

·         Clear aligner trays are virtually unnoticeable

·         Removable trays allow for greater ease of eating and tooth cleaning

·         Technological advancements can cut treatment time in half when compared to braces

Invisalign is more comfortable, less obtrusive, and often faster than braces, making this orthodontic solution ideal for many of our adult and older teen patients.

If you live in or around Madera, California and would like to learn if Invisalign is right for you, please contact Gregory D. Miyake today to schedule an initial consultation.
