What is sleep apnea?

There are two main types of sleep apnea:

  • Central sleep apnea (CSA)
  • Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA)

Both types are sleeping disorders in which breathing stops for several seconds at frequent intervals throughout the night.

What are some of the symptoms of sleep apnea?

Snoring is one of the main symptoms of sleep apnea. In addition, when breathing resumes after a period of cessation, choking and gasping for air are common. Other symptoms may include daytime fatigue, frequent sore throats, headaches or dry mouth upon waking, irritability, problems concentrating, and not feeling rested when you wake.

What causes sleep apnea?

The causes of sleep apnea will depend on the type of sleep apnea you have. CSA is caused when the brain fails to send signals to the breathing muscles. OSA is caused when the muscles in the back of the throat over relax, narrowing the airways and obstructing proper oxygen flow.

What are the risk factors for sleep apnea?

Risk factors for OSA include age, sex, race, genetics, and family history. They also include lifestyle choices such as smoking, alcohol consumption, and the use of sedatives or narcotics.

Risk factors for CSA include age and sex, as well as medical conditions such as heart disease, stroke, and brain tumors.

How is sleep apnea treated?

CSA is best treated with a CPAP machine that provides a steady flow of oxygen by way of masks or tubes.

OSA can often be treated with a dental device that is worn while sleeping. These devices reposition your jaw and tongue and help keep your airway open. If you have been diagnosed with OSA, Fresno sleep apnea dentist Dr. Greg Miyake can work with your doctor to determine if this simple, noninvasive solution would work for you.
